Approximately 120 students and teachers gathered at the Lifelong Learning Institute on 25 July 2018 to attend the Business China Youth Showdown finals and show their support for the five finalist teams from Dunman High School, Hwa Chong Institution, Ngee Ann Polytechnic, River Valley High School and Singapore Polytechnic. These five teams previously participated in the Preliminary Round held on 8 June and emerged victorious from the 14 participating teams. After an exciting final showdown, Ngee Ann Polytechnic (Team 1) emerged as overall champion while River Valley High School (Team 1) and Dunman High School (Team 2) ranked second and third respectively.
The top three teams of the Youth Showdown will be awarded complimentary access to the prestigious FutureChina Global Forum (FCGF) and Singapore Regional Business Forum (SRBF) 2018, to be held on 27 and 28 August at The Ritz-Carlton, Millenia Singapore.
This year, teams shared their research and views in an 8-minute presentation on “Youth and Innovation: Creating a Future for All?” followed by a 5-minute Q&A session. The judging criteria consisted of content (40%), presentation (30%) and a question and answer session (30%). Through videos, skits, 3D models and more, teams creatively tackled the hot topic and presented how technological innovations are shaping the future generation.
The Guest-of-Honour was Mr Lee Yi Shyan, Chairman of Business China. In his opening remarks, Mr Lee emphasised the importance of mastering the Chinese language as a tool in successfully bridging Singapore and China.
The judging panel consisted of Ms Tin Pei Ling, CEO of Business China, Mr Christopher Chow, Deputy Director, International Trading Institute, Singapore Management University and Mr Chia Kim Huat, Regional Head, Rajah & Tann Singapore LLP. In their closing remarks, the judges shared that they were highly impressed by the breadth of topics discussed and complimented the use of interactive media in the presentations.
The objective of the Business China Youth Showdown is to equip the youths with a deeper understanding of the forces and factors shaping China’s emergence as a global power in relevance to Singapore. This bilingual national platform provides the opportunity for Singaporean youths to exchange their views on hot-button China topics and interact with like-minded youths.
