Business China Youth Series - Owning your future: Different Pathways to Success

Business China organised the sixth Youth Series, “Owning your future: Different pathways to success” on 11 November 2020. Business China’s young business leaders, Mr Chris Pok, CEO of KrisShop and Mr Lester Neo, CEO of Solomonic Pte Ltd shared their insights on opportunities beyond Singapore and how Singaporean youths could position themselves for success in this challenging period.

The session was moderated by Ms Daphne Tan Hui Yee, CEO of Code Gakko and supported by NUS Centre for Future-ready Graduates.

Participants of the webinar were polled before the dialogue session and nearly 67% indicated some degree of willingness to step out of their comfort zone and venture into uncharted territories. During the dialogue session, both Mr Pok and Mr Neo shared their experience on how they shaped and built their career. The speakers found the poll results encouraging and in turn expressed their hopes that youths boldly seize opportunities and utilise them well by discovering their own interests and continuously seek out opportunities to upgrade themselves. They also urged Singaporean youths to gain work experience overseas to grow professionally and to expand their horizon.

Both speakers pointed out that China offers a huge and dynamic market for Singaporean youths. Mr Pok mentioned that it is crucial for youths to understand their competitive edge in order to excel in the vast Chinese market while Mr Neo shared that forging and building strong friendships and relationships with key partners are essential to succeed in China.

During the Q&A session, the speakers discussed the importance of youths developing passion throughout their career. Mr Pok shared that one may discover their passion when they embrace challenges while Mr Neo emphasised that instead of being driven by monetary incentives, passion should drive and motivate youths to progress. Both speakers also highlighted that it is important for youths to keep up with learning and to keep an open mind to stay flexible in the face of challenges.
