FutureChina Global Forum 2017
The eighth edition of the FutureChina Global Forum (FCGF) 2017, held on 13 and 14 July, brought together close to 70 China experts to discuss the opportunities in the future economy and areas for potential collaboration in the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) with some 500 corporate leaders, senior executives and renowned academics.
The annual forum, themed “Strengthening Partnerships: In The Future Economy, Belt and Road”, focused on topics such as the cooperation areas in advent of the BRI, the know-hows of collaboration between countries along the BRI and their Chinese counterparts, as well as the strategies to cope with the rise of new technologies in the future economy.
Guest-of-Honour Deputy Prime Minister and Co-chairman of the Singapore-China Joint Council for Bilateral Cooperation (JCBC), Mr Teo Chee Hean said in his address at the opening lunch, that the three areas for cooperation in the BRI are firstly, ensuring the safe and free flow of goods, services and data; secondly, facilitating financial flows that can support the BRI and the internationalisation of the Chinese yuan; and thirdly, stronger civil-society interactions between Singapore and China.
Amongst the distinguished speakers also included: Dr Chen Deming, Standing Committee Member of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, President of China's Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits; Mr Lan Tian Li, Standing Member of the CPC Guangxi Regional Committee and First Vice Governor of Guangxi, People’s Republic China; Mr Zhang Jie, Vice President, Chinese Academy of Sciences.
The opening lunch also saw the signings of Memoranda of Understanding between Business China and 10 local and Chinese organisations in a bid to promote meaningful engagements to establish platforms and people-to-people networks that will further strengthen Sino-Singapore relations.
These 10 organisations were: Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region People's Government of the People's Republic of China, the Chinese Academy of Sciences Holdings Co Ltd, Bank of China, China Enterprises Association (Singapore), Nanyang Technological University Alumni Affairs Office, National University of Singapore, OCBC Bank, Singapore Chamber of Commerce and Industry in China (SingCham), Singapore-China Business Association, and Guangdong Enterprise Association (Singapore).
Chairman of Business China, Mr Lee Yi Shyan, highlighted in his welcome remarks that the Singapore-China savvy network will boost people-to-people interconnectivity and be a regional connector that plugs Singapore to the regional market network.
Patron of Business China, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong graced the FCGF Closing Dinner on 14 July as the keynoe speaker, and celebrated Business China’s 10th anniversary which was held in conjunction with Business China Awards 2017. (Click here for event report on Business China Awards 2017.)
On possible areas of future cooperation with China, PM Lee said that China may be world-class in many areas moving forward, but Singapore can still find niches to work with China. He referred to the BRI as an open, welcoming, intensification of mutually beneficial linkages and stressed that its success was hinged on the free flow of trade and goods, which is also Singapore’s ‘lifeblood’.
On the evolution of Singapore-China bilateral relations, PM Lee remarked that “As (countries) grow more prosperous, capable, more open to the world, what we used to do and they used to find us useful for will change. As others progress, we continue to make progress with and in some aspects ahead of them. And then we remain useful to them.”
Held at the Shangri-La Hotel Singapore this year, the FutureChina Global Forum is a high-level China-centric forum established by Business China in 2010.
