2010 慧眼中国环球论坛 《对话会暨晚宴》
通商中国主席蔡天宝先生致辞

Honorable Minister Mentor Mr Lee Kuan Yew
His Excellencies
Board Members of Business China
Distinguished guests
Ladies and gentlemen

A very good evening to all of you!

On behalf of Business China, it is my great pleasure to welcome you once again to the FutureChina Global Forum. For the benefit of our guests who are only joining us for tonight dinner, please allow me to briefly recap our objective in hosting the Forum.

Business China was launched jointly by Minister Mentor Mr Lee Kuan Yew and China Premier Mr Wen Jiabao in November 2007 as a platform integrating Chinese language, culture and economy.  An important part of our mission is to strengthen Singapore as a cultural and economic bridge linking the world and China.
Singapore and China celebrates 20 years of diplomatic relations this year.  Ties between our countries are strong and growing in all areas.  To commemorate this significant milestone in our relations, Business China organized today’s forum, bringing together, in Singapore, eminent thought leaders and practitioners from diverse fields who offer interesting viewpoints about China.

Judging by the discussions among the 300 participants today, what we have is really a community of insiders who are excited about the new trends and influences shaping China’s development.

The forum opened with His Excellency Mr Wu Jianmin (吴建民), Executive Vice Chairman of China Institute for Innovation and Development Strategy, sharing with us the key factors that are shaping China’s evolution over the next decade.  During lunch, US Ambassador to China His Excellency Mr Jon Huntsman gave his views on the future of US-China relations.  Issues like China’s economic strategies, reshaping of society, cultural explosion and technological frontiers were also touched on by other distinguished speakers. In short, this venue is filled with a rare and exciting combination of intellectual power and expert knowledge.

Tonight, we have the privilege of hearing from our guest-of-honour, Minister Mentor Mr Lee Kuan Yew, who is also the patron of Business China.  I am sure, like me, you look forward to the dialogue to be moderated by Mr Robin Hu, Senior EVP of Singapore Press Holdings’ Chinese Newspapers & Services.

As part of Business China’s mission to nurture bilingual and bicultural young Singaporeans, we have offered student scholarships to 10 outstanding undergraduates from our three local universities to attend the Forum.  After the Forum, the students will each submit an essay on a China-related topic.  Three students with outstanding essays are eligible to participate in a 2-week immersion programme to China in end of this year.   Worth mentioning, we have a group of young Business China members who contribute actively by organising events targeted at youths.  They are also here tonight. May I request our young members and the undergraduates to stand and be identified? …… Thank you.

We are happy to nurture these young talents to learn more about China by listening to our distinguished speakers.

Now, please allow me to say a few words in Mandarin.
