Kudos to Hanban(汉办)

Touring Hanban has made me more aware of China’s meteoric rise beyond commerce and trade, most importantly, and refreshingly, in its cultural sphere. The exhibits of Hanban successfully preserves China’s past, highlights China’s present, yet dares its visitors to imagine a more confident China in the near future. Culture gifts a country more worth, beyond mere commerce and trade. The former cannot be easily replicated, unlike the latter.
As a political science student, Hanban fascinates me tremendously, because it is a prime example of China’s soft power. In balance with China’s mantra of a harmonious society and its peaceful rise, I believe the establishment of Confucian institutes worldwide, is the first step towards achieving China’s grand strategy. This is indeed a refreshing alternative to hard politics, in the face of which the positive diplomatic impacts of culture and heritage are often overlooked. Hanban reinforces and boldly asserts China’s preference to be a peaceful stakeholder in the international community, than an unwilling and unprepared hegemon.
I highly recommend a visit to Hanban when possible. While the Peking duck and Great Wall are the most common features of Beijing, to me, Hanban is a more holistic alternative, representation and encapsulation of China, than the above touring and dining experiences can ever offer.
Hanban exists in the present, for the future. I would think it is the 5th grand invention of the New China, at long last. Kudos to Hanban for making a Huaqiao feels at home, again. In this sense, Hanban has succeeded a long time ago.
