The direction they will chart in the next 30 years is still a work-in-progress - but Special Assistance Plan (SAP) schools' history of promoting Chinese culture and understanding "is a strength and a tradition, we should develop on and protect it", said Senior Minister of State for Education and National Development Grace Fu.

"The road that SAP schools are to take, is something everyone is in the midst of figuring out," she told reporters at the 2009 SAP Seminar.

By 2012, all 10 SAP secondary and 15 SAP primary schools would have developed their flagship programmes with unique Chinese language or cultural activities.

The SAP programme, in its 30th year, has helped nurture China-savvy students. Out of the 10 recipients of the PSC China Scholarship this year, seven were graduates of the bicultural studies programme (Chinese) at some SAP schools.
